Built from 1857 – 1859 for James Henry Hammond. Mr Hammond, during his life, was the Governor of  South Carolina, a congressman and a state senator. He was a great believer in slavery and is famous for saying “cotton is king” in a speech to the US Senate in 1858. He believed that slavery controlled the black man’s base carnal instincts.

Stories say he had sex with many people outside of his bounds of marriage including with other women (both black and white), children and many of of his male slaves. Yet if his slaves wanted a divorce they had to prove their reasons to him and still got 100 lashes and were forbidden to marry again for 3 years. His mistreatment of his slaves was horrific and also the norm for the time period – which is considerably more horrific.

After sheltering three generations of his Hammond’s family the house and grounds were donated to the state in 1973 and converted into a state historical site.

The apparitions of former slaves are seen on the grounds. The apparition of Mr Hammond himself has been witnessed both on the grounds on in the house itself. People have reported being touched by invisible presences in the house and on the grounds. Disembodied voices and phantom screams have been heard. There is a group of three trees in a field on the grounds – this area is reported to be cursed and no one enters the trees without something strange happening to them.

Other activity: feelings of being watched, light anomalies, shadow figures.
